Are Reptilians Living Among Us? The Theory Explained

2026.05.06 · 7 MIN READ · 1389 WORDS

The Strangest Idea in the Archive

Of all the stories in this archive, this is the one people laugh at first.

Tall, shape-shifting beings from another star. They look like us. They sit in boardrooms and parliaments. Beneath the human face, scales.

The reptilians.

It sounds like a bad science fiction plot. And yet millions of people have heard of it, and a surprising number say they believe it. It is worth asking where it came from, because the answer is stranger than the theory.

Serpents Before Science Fiction

The snake has been a symbol of hidden knowledge since the first stories. A serpent in the garden. The feathered serpent of Mesoamerica, Quetzalcoatl. The Nagas of India, serpent beings who guard treasure and water. Dragons in China, wise and ancient. In many cultures, the snake is both wisdom and danger.

That is the soil. The idea of a race of reptile beings was already waiting for someone to plant it.

In 1929, the American pulp writer Robert E. Howard published a story called The Shadow Kingdom. It featured an ancient race of serpent men who could take human form and infiltrate a kingdom. It was fiction, and it was good fiction. It set a template that stuck.

In the 1940s, a pamphlet by the occultist Maurice Doreal described a serpent race living beneath the Gobi desert. In the same decade, the pulp magazine Amazing Stories published the strange claims of Richard Shaver, who said sinister underground beings called Deros were controlling humanity with hidden rays.

In 1976, a writer named Zecharia Sitchin published The 12th Planet, arguing that Sumerian texts described visitors from a hidden planet, the Anunnaki, who created humans. Sitchin’s translations are rejected by Assyriologists, but his book sold millions and fed the idea of ancient astronauts.

Then, in 1983, American television aired a miniseries called V. Its aliens looked human, smiled, and offered friendship. Beneath their skin, they were lizards who ate rodents and planned to take Earth. The image of a human face peeling away to show a reptile entered a generation of minds.

The Brain That Gave It a Name

In the 1960s, the neuroscientist Paul MacLean proposed that the human brain has three layers from evolution, one of them a primitive “reptilian complex” that drives instinct, aggression and territory. The model has since been mostly set aside by neuroscientists, but the phrase survived.

Today, people still say “reptilian brain” when they mean a cold, instinctive, ruthless part of us. It makes the next step easy. If there is a reptile inside every human, maybe in some humans it runs the show.

The Storyteller From South Africa

Credo Mutwa, a Zulu historian, healer and storyteller who lived from 1921 to 2020, spoke in his later years of a race of reptilian beings who had once visited Earth. He described them in terms drawn from African oral tradition and from his own visions. Admirers regard him as a keeper of traditions. Critics say his claims mixed folklore with later influences.

His stories would reach an English-speaking audience through a man from Leicester.

David Icke

David Icke was a British football goalkeeper turned sports broadcaster turned Green Party spokesman. In 1991 he appeared on a popular BBC chat show and said that he was the son of God. The audience laughed. His career as a mainstream figure ended on that night.

He did not stop. In 1999, he published The Biggest Secret. It said that the world is run by a hidden bloodline of reptilian beings from the star system Alpha Draconis. They are tall, shape-shifting, drink blood, and are descended from the Anunnaki. They control banks, governments and monarchies. Politicians, royals and bankers, he said, are reptilians in human form.

The book was a success. Icke now speaks to audiences worldwide. In 2013, a survey by Public Policy Polling found that 4 percent of American voters, about twelve million people, said they believed shape-shifting reptilians control our politics. The margin of error was nearly three points. Some may have been joking. Some were not.

The Part We Have to Say Out Loud

Here we have to be direct.

Scholars who study conspiracy theories, including the political scientist Michael Barkun, note that the reptilian theory has a darker side. Many of its supposed reptilians are bankers and financiers, the Rothschild family among them. Many of the books Icke cites are old antisemitic forgeries, such as the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. Critics argue that “reptilian” can function as a thin disguise for a very old and very ugly accusation against Jewish people.

Icke has denied any antisemitic intent and has said his claims are about a bloodline, not a people. His critics say the pattern is the same.

We include this because it matters. A fun, strange, supernatural story can carry something poisonous on its back. Anyone who tells you that “the elites are lizards” should ask who exactly they mean by the elites.

Why Does It Spread?

Researchers have offered several reasons why the idea attracts people.

It gives a face to a feeling. If you feel that the world is controlled by people who do not care about you, a villain with scales is simpler than a complicated system.

It cannot be disproved. Any evidence against it, such as a politician’s normal behavior, can be explained as the shapeshifter’s skill. That is the signature of a closed theory.

It comes with a visual hook. Internet videos show politicians whose faces seem to glitch for a moment. Video compression, camera frame rates and lighting can all create those flickers. Believers see a mask slip. Engineers see a codec.

It sits inside a wider mood. Distrust in institutions has grown, and in that mood, a bold story can feel like truth.

Some psychologists add that the human mind is wired to see patterns and faces, especially in ambiguous shapes. We are made to see the hidden face in the dark.

What Science Says

Biology has little patience for this one. Reptiles and mammals split from a common ancestor more than three hundred million years ago. A species that looks human, reproduces with us, and also holds the physiology of a lizard would break nearly everything we know about evolution.

No physical evidence of a reptilian humanoid has ever been presented. No DNA sample, no body, no verified photograph. The “evidence” consists of videos, eyewitness claims and ancient texts read in new ways.

Astronomers add that interstellar travel remains an unsolved problem, and that Alpha Draconis, the star where reptilians are said to originate, is a real star system about 300 light years away.

What It Is Not Telling You

And yet.

Hold the theory still for a moment, and what is left?

A story about hidden rulers. About beings who are not what they appear to be. About truth concealed in old texts, old statues and old kings. That’s an archetype as old as storytelling. The details are new, the shape is not.

The people who tell it are mostly not hunting for scales. They are trying to say something about power. About the feeling that those at the top are different from the rest of us, that they follow other rules, and that we are not told the truth.

That feeling is real. The explanation is not.

Where It Stands

What is documented:

Where the idea came from. Pulp fiction, occult pamphlets, Sitchin’s reading of Sumerian tablets, a 1980s television miniseries, a theory of the brain, and the books of David Icke. The poll. The platforms that banned Icke in 2020 for spreading false claims about health. The scholars who see an old hatred wearing a new costume.

What is not:

Any physical evidence that humanoid reptiles exist, walk among us, or run anything.

What remains:

A question about why a story that looks so absurd keeps coming back. Because stories do not survive for being true. They survive for being useful. And this one has been useful to people who feel unheard, and dangerous to people who have been blamed.

Maybe the lizards are a metaphor. Maybe they are a lie. Maybe they are a costume that real prejudice wears.

Or maybe you checked the mirror this morning and your face was just fine.

Read it. Doubt it. Decide for yourself.
